What do you think about the bp chemical benzene release?
It appears that BP tried to bury this news over the weekend while everyone else was watching a saw get stuck in the blow out pipe a mile underwater. That’s right BP hid the fact that they released incredible amounts of highly toxic benzene into the air for 40 straight days.
TEXAS CITY, Texas — At BP’s Texas City refinery, more than 400 pounds a day of benzene — 40 times the state reportable levels — was released during a 40-day period while a subunit of the refinery’s ultracracker unit was offline, according to a company filing with the state’s environmental agency Friday.
In all, BP officials said more than 500,000 pounds of pollutants and nonpollutants were released while the company increased flaring as they tried to repair a compressor on the faulty unit.
Refinery spokesman Michael Marr said in its follow up reporting with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, BP estimated 36,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides and 17,000 pounds of benzene were released in the 40 days. State law requires 10 pounds or more of benzene and 200 pounds or more of nitrogen oxide during a 24-hour period must be reported through the commission’s air emissions database.
Benzene is a carcinogen naturally found in oil that has been linked to some forms of cancer, according to U.S. Health and Human Services records. Nitrogen oxides react to sunlight to form ozone and can damage lung tissue and cause respiratory problems.
Something at home is poisoning me. I need professional help.?
for a quarter of a year:
regular headaches and severe migraines, dryness of mouth, ears popping, clogged up feeling in one of my ears and bad tinnitus, grogginess and inability to think straight.
Symptoms started exactly when I moved home quarter of a year ago. Fine before then. If I go away the symptoms disappear and if I return they reappear. Doctor does absolutely nothing. Contacted environmental health department of council – did absolutely nothing. Carbon monoxide detector doesn’t go off. Someone tested living room (only) for carbon monoxide (CO) and found nothing.
Please is there like some professional who can test the air for poisonous gas? I really need to eliminate this possiblity – that some sort of gas is in the air – but I don’t know who might do such a service. (Obviously there are many types of poisonous gas other than CO)
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Unfortunately, since asking this question things have developed:
I phoned the National Grid and they have now told me that the person they sent round in July did not test for CO (only methane gas). I am going to have blood tests in one hour and they will be sent to hospital. The doctor didn’t test me before because I had told the doctor that the guy had tested for CO and hadn’t found anything. But he didn’t test at all – he just said he did.
If the blood test show high levels of CO then I have suffered for the last month because of the gasman’s incompetence I now have some tinnitus and permanent hearing loss and prolonged exposure to CO may have caused permanent brain damage.
Lung/rib pain after inhaling smoke/dust in the city…?
First let me state that I am extremely paranoid when it comes to dusts, smoke, chemicals and other man made environmental hazards. If I see some road work being done somewhere, I have to close all my car windows, turn off my AC because I am mortally afraid of breathing it in. Sounds dramatic…it’s just the one thing that I’m picky about. Well here goes:
I was driving in the metro area of my city and my windows were down. And somewhere in front of me, I don’t know if it was some kind of concrete dust or overheated car exhaust, but it came out of nowhere and into my car. I breathe and it smells like car exhaust but it was white and looked dusty. Half a minute later my rib area hurts momentarily like when you breathe in mustard sauce…it was sharp and goes away not long after. I’m generally very sensitive to smoggy air, so maybe if it was car or bus exhaust it just irritated me a little. Or it was just in my head. I haven’t felt anything since and generally I’m in good health, very physically active, blood pressure is good etc.
If it was some kind of road work dust or concrete, is there any health risk from breathing it in once?
Any comment appreciated.
Yeah my paranoia comes from stories about firefighters on 9/11 getting all those respiratory problems & in general people getting sick from dust exposure
College major/Career advice…Please read…?
I’m trying to chose my exact major, but could use some feedback. I want to own my own business that contribute to helping others achieve optimal health and weight management. I’ve taken a nutrition class before but found the foundations slightly boring. I love reading about health in magazines, studying about environmental issues, psychology, communications and sociology. I want to help people, but I know I couldn’t stand to become a dietician and talk about food all day and then deal with people not following through with their instructed diet. All in all, I feel passionately about companies that help people and help the environment (Green/organic). If you have any suggestions on majors and minors that would seem relevant to my rantings, your feedback would be greatly appreciated ; ) OR if you have any ideas of side jobs or things I might want to look into that would also, be appreciated. Thanks!
I was thinking more along the lines of something more business oriented…Green company…organics…weight management system…ect.
How To Lose Abdominal And Thigh Fat?
Okay i am 13 and i am 5’0 and last time i checked like 3 or 4 months ago i weighed 157 ): i have kinda working out and i have kinda a 4 pack abs but its been weeks since i worked out. so here are some ideas on how i can lose abdominal fat. i don’t look fat but when i take off my shirt and my shorts u just want to stab your eyes. these are some tips i got from ehow on how teenage girls should lose abdominal weight.
How to Lose Belly Fat for Teen Girls
1. Cut back on sugary foods. Sugary treats like cake, cookies and ice cream can cause abdominal weight.
Additionally, sodas and some juices contain several grams of sugar.
Pay attention to food labels and eliminate or limit sugary foods and beverages from your diet.
2. Begin a workout routine. Set aside time to exercise. Work out for a minimum of 30 minutes daily.
Effective exercises include walking, jogging, playing sports, biking or swimming.
3. Drink plenty of water. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses a day to lose belly fat.
Water flushes excess sodium, sugar and fluids from your body.
4.Take a fiber supplement. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables,
or take a daily fiber supplement to promote digestive health and get rid of abdominal bloating.
5.Eliminate fatty foods from your diet. Stay away from high-fat foods,
including fried foods and fast foods. Choose low-fat or no-fat alternatives
6. Reduce your calorie intake. Eat smaller food portions and decrease your calorie intake by 500 per day.
In other words, if you normally consume 1,900 calories a day, eat no more than 1,400.
Do not go below 1200 net calories a day–net calories are the number of calories you eat minus the
number of calories you have burned exercising. Dropping below 1200 calories may rob your body of the
nutrients and energyit needs to run efficiently leaving you tired, weak and prone to illness and injury.
7. Eat organic. Many researchers believe that the added hormones in our
food supply are contributing to the weight problem we are seeing in America.
Switching to organic foods will help to eliminate some of the environmental hormones
you are exposed to and may help to decrease your belly fat.
